Meet Philadelphia-Based Litigator Karl Heideck

What is a Litigator?

A litigator is often confused with trial lawyers and many people cannot distinguish the differences between them. Trial lawyers exceed in the courtroom while in contrast, litigators examine the big picture that includes the entire case from start to finish. Since managing a case from start to finish covers a lot of ground, it begins with a full investigation.

It is the job of the litigator to gather every minor detail that may have some influence or ultimately affect the outcome of a case. A litigator has a legal and ethical obligation to advocate for his client to the best of his ability. A litigator’s investigation may also involve enlisting the help of other professionals such as private investigators or accountants.

What Type of Education Are Litigators Required to Have?

A typical litigator will have completed an undergraduate degree, earned a Juris Doctor, and have passed the bar exam. Also, a good litigator usually has several years of experience as an attorney working in a specialized field of litigation. Most litigators advance into positions for larger companies or go into a partnership or private practice.

Unlike criminal lawyers, litigators are civil lawyers that represent clients who seek to settle nonviolent disputes. These disputes include custody battles, divorce settlements, and disagreements regarding property ownership, to name a few. Litigators cover a variety of topics in the law field to include:

Consumer law

Entertainment law

Employment law

Tax law

Family law

International law
