One Day, One Life, One sight at a time

Sightsavers is a charity that has an international roster of 30 locations with one of those locations being based in the UK. Sightsavers works closely with ministries, government, and none government organizations for the purpose of preventable treatment for blindness. In the UK Sightsavers charity foundation focuses on the causes of blindness’s such as trachoma, river blindness, and cataracts just to name a few. The focus is to develop preventative treatments and then distribute them to countries that are underdeveloped and do not have access to the proper medical care (with emphasis on Africa and Asia).

Dr. Caroline Harper is the CEO of Sightsavers and has been since 2005. As she traveled abroad, she became observant of the lack of health care and treatment for the blind in underdeveloped countries. This evoked her passion to advocate to bring awareness on an international level to the individuals who are disabled because of blindness. Working through the charity organization accepting donations for research and treatment, Sightsavers has experienced great expansion under Dr. Harper’s leadership as CEO in the UK sector and is more internationally recognized and respected then they were in 2005. Because of her advocacy, outpatient treatment and medications are available in developing countries that were not accessible before.

The ultimate goal of Sightsavers since it’s inception is to protect human eyesight, fight disease, and provide rights to individuals born with disabilities throughout the world. By promoting health in underdeveloped communities, the foundation is laid for communities to be groomed for economic wealth. These ideals are set forth with the vision of someday all countries being developed and independent. It is only because of the millions of people across the world who have donated their time, efforts, and money that the vision of Sightsavers was able to come to life and stay alive.
